A Digital Camera is a gadget that captures still photographs or videos or both in the digital format for the electronic processing of images through computers. In today's scenario, digital cameras easily outsell their counterparts, the 35 mm cameras that use photographic film for image capture. The first professional digital camera was commercially released in the market during the year 1991 by Kodak with a 1.3 Mega Pixels image sensor, it was a Nikon F3. The first digital cameras aimed at the consumer level market were the Apple Quicktake 100 in 1994, the Kodak DC-40 and the Casio QV-11 in 1995 and Sony's Cybershot still digital camera in 1996. Kodak, however, takes the cake since it successfully pursued an aggressive marketing campaign with Kinkos, Microsoft, IBM and Hewlett Packard. The marketing strategy worked and the world of digital cameras saw a paradigm shift.

Digital imaging has a long history, though. In the 1950s, televisions and video cameras used the Charged Coupled Device (CCD) to sense the light colours and their intensity. During the 1960s, space probes made use of digital signals for mapping the moon's surface and subsequently sent the digital images back to our earth. This technology was used by spy satellites as well at that time. In the 1970s, the electronic camera without film came into picture. Only in 1981 did the first of the commercial electronic cameras get launched with the Sony Mavica Still Electronic Camera.

But here too, Kodak comes off as a clear winner, since, from the middle of the 70s, Kodak invented several of its solid state image sensors that went on to convert light into digital pictures for both the home consumers and for professional use as well. In 1986, Kodak scientists came out with the world's first megapixels sensor, with a capacity of recording up to 1.4 million pixels and capable of producing 5 x 7 inches prints of digital photo quality. In 1987, Kodak released seven more products for the purpose of recording, storing, transmitting and printing of images in electronic still videos. In 1990, Kodak developed its first Photo CD system that set worldwide standards in terms of defining colour in digital environments. Finally, in 1991, the first digital camera was commercially launched by Kodak.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX5 is a more modest, pocket-sized digital camera, and it is likely to appeal to people looking for a classier-than-average snapshot model with the advantages of 4-megapixel resolution and some more advanced features.

These advanced features include a 4fps burst mode, which can record up to seven frames at the camera’s maximum resolution, which is impressive in a digital camera, especially a modestly-priced pocket-sized model like this one.

There’s an image stabiliser mechanism, too, which should cut down on camera shake with longer telephoto settings and in low light levels. On the downside, you only get a 16MB SD card to store your shots on (32MB or more is better for a 4-megapixel camera), and the ISO range is lower than the average at 50-200.

The neat rectangular styling is coupled with a satin metal finish on the front is very smart, but round the back things look a little messier and slightly less expensive feeling.

You power up via a small but positive switch on the top plate. Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX5 is a snappy performer, and ready to shoot in just one second. The LCD is good, and works well in both bright, outdoor lighting and under dim, tungsten light indoors. There’s an optical viewfinder, too, but it’s small and you’re far more likely to use the LCD to compose your shots.

By pressing the Display button next to the LCD’s top right-hand corner, you can activate a real-time image histogram, display compositional guides or switch off all image information leaving only a clear, unobstructed view of the scene in front of the camera.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX5 Speed of responses

The AF system isn’t the quickest, taking between half a second and a second to focus, depending on the zoom setting and the lighting conditions, it locks on with a clearly audible beep, though, and there’s very little hunting – it’s decisive, even if it isn’t that fast.

The zoom action could be quicker: it takes almost three seconds to zoom from one end of the range to the other, but there are eight intermediate positions in between, so it’s possible to ‘nudge’ the zoom with some accuracy to get the framing just how you want it.

The main mode dial is small but clearly laid out, with settings for program AF shooting and the camera’s various scene modes: macro, portrait, landscape, night portrait and self-portrait mode. There are also settings for playback mode, movies and a ’simple’ mode for outright beginners, in the centre of the mode dial is a button for cycling through the camera’s sequence-shooting modes. A neat bit of design means it’s easy to turn the knurled rim of the mode dial with your thumb while you’re holding the camera.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX5 controls

Below the mode dial is the camera’s navigational controller. This is a single-piece pad you can push up, down, left and right. Normally, these are vague and sloppy, but the Panasonic’s is very good indeed. The movement is short but positive, and it’s just as good – for once – as separate buttons.

Its features and performance aren’t exceptional, but it goes about its work in a pleasing, businesslike way. What’s more, it offers shortcuts to various shooting options while you’re taking pictures. Press up once to activate the EV compensation option, and then up again to set the camera’s autobracket feature; press left to activate the self-timer, with its choice of 2-second or 10-second delays; press right to cycle between the various flash modes; and press down to activate the quick review mode, which displays the last shot taken.

The quality of the navipad is a big bonus when you navigate the camera menus, though these are a little confusing at first. Each option, when selected, expands in size and displaces the others. It’s a bit disorientating at first, though straightforward enough once you’ve got the hang of it. You need the menus to change the white-balance setting, picture size and quality, activate the spot-metering mode and change the ISO. You can adjust the action of the camera’s image stabiliser mechanism, though something must have been lost in the manual’s English translation because the difference between the modes isn’t clear.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX5 Picture quality

Is there a price to pay in image quality when you buy a camera this small and neat? At first, it doesn’t look like it. Fine detail rendition is very good, and there’s little sign of the edge ‘halos’ and digital noise that signify aggressive in-camera sharpening.

However, it does tend to underexpose outdoor shots with bright overcast skies. All digital cameras do this, but the Panasonic seems worse than most. The classic solution is to point the camera slightiy downward to exclude most of the sky, half-press the shutter button to ‘lock’ the exposure, then reframe and shoot.

Indoors, the flash performance seems weak. Available light shots taken in dim lighting seem to come out rather dark, too. And while it’s generally accurate, the white balance can throw up the odd surprise.

Although Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX5 is a neat, well made and intelligently designed digital camera, its features and performance aren’t exceptional, but it goes about its work in a pleasing, businesslike way. The controls, layout and quality of finish lend it a superior feel to most of its rivals. On paper, it’s unremarkable – you have to use it to begin to appreciate it.

I take all kinds of things, with all types of cameras. I am a photographer working in advertising and enterprise customers, and to do my photography books on photography. Over the past two years I have worked with small cameras like the Canon G10 and SX10 most of my work.

In the studio, shot, or shots of small products of these cameras, lights, thanks to its easy-to-use Live View and the greater depth of field. When I bought the SX-10 is the long zoom range that the site was running a booth nearby building to fire the head of construction cranes. I have some portraits with studio lighting and an SX10 and were also very helpful. I hope that the SX 10 and SX-20 Raw files were available, but it is not. This means that only I was a little 'cautious WB and exposure. I have the SX10 at the outdoor meeting and noted that the target will be better than expected, until the end.

    Check for lowest prices
So why the SX-20? I was recently asked to give more and more video clips little to do for customers and for my publisher and I Although the results of the SX10 want HD video for real time when a medical practice for the video clips on their site Web and added to Power Point and other uses. I wanted more details on the time that the clip used in presentations scheduled. The free-point.

I spent several days examining the SX 10 and the results are very, very good. The front-mounted microphones are of good quality very high for most applications is acceptable. I want a microphone? You bet! Do not treat sick? Not at all.

The image quality of still pictures is only as good as the SX-10 to ISO low and about 1 / 2 was better to stay at 200 and 400 I chalk that up to the new DIGIC.

Overall, the build quality and ease of use make this camera a winner for me. These days customers are more interested in using images and video in a wide range of multimedia and the SX-20 is a great tool for all that is what the Internet is headed. I still use traditional cameras and DSLRs, but left to themselves, I think the camera sensor smaller than the very competent and very useful.

With SX20 and G10, I feel able to handle anything, except for images that need to reduce the depth of field. Traditional photographers May not want the video can be heard on the need of expertise, but will not continue. This camera is a cheap way to dip your feet, you can find your way and get your feet wet. I like it. Read more reviews

A thermographic or ‘infrared’ camera forms an image using infrared radiation. Infrared theory states that all objects emit a certain amount of radiation based on their temperature, called black-body radiation. In most cases, the higher an object's temperature, the more infrared radiation is emitted.

An infrared camera detects this radiation the way an ordinary camera detects and processes visible light. It works even in total darkness because the overall light level does not matter. Images from infrared cameras tend to be monochromatic because the cameras are generally designed with only a single type of sensor responding to single wavelength range of infrared radiation.

Infrared cameras can generally be divided into two types of cameras: those with cooled infrared image detectors and those with uncooled infrared image detectors.

Cooled Image Detectors are typically contained in a vacuum-sealed case and cryogenically cooled. Their sensitivity is increased because their own temperatures are much lower than the objects from which they are trying to detect radiation. Their sensors would be 'blinded' or flooded by their own radiation if they were not cooled.

Because of these ‘cool’ properties, they can provide superior image quality than uncooled infrared cameras. The drawbacks are that they are expensive to run and produce, using a lot of time and energy.

Do the research and figure what kind of infrared camera you really want to invest in if you're thinking about investing in one. There are many models out there ranging from the most basic to more deluxe models, and the technology keeps getting better. Because of infrared technology, a firefighter could go into a burning building and rescue people, target hot spots, and see through the smoke. The range of uses for infrared technology keeps growing, and infrared cameras can now be used by a company or organization, and even an individual’s home.

Uncooled infrared cameras are different than their cooler cousins because their sensors operate at room temperature. The sensors detect infrared radiation via an electrical signal that is sent back to them when they detect higher temperatures. Uncooled infrared cameras are smaller and less costly than cooled infrared cameras but their resolution and image quality tend to be lower. Uncooled infrared cameras can get noisier as they get hotter, but they can also stabilize to an operating temperature that reduces image noise

A concept that revolutionized camera technology, infrared cameras opened numerous new doors for security and intelligence operations. Once existing solely in the realm of science fiction, infrared technology has now become a standard facet of our everyday lives.

The latest FinePix AV100 and AX200 are adorned with all that won’t let the photography buffs complain of any type as far their specs or features sheets is concerned. So, enjoy amazing photo-capturing experience with FinePix AV100 and AX200.

Do NOT use Windex or any other corrosive cleaner on your lens. You will ruin the lens.

You can get lens papers or a lint-free chamois cloth from your local camera shop or photo developer. You can also get a lens cleaning solution from an eyeglasses store and a lint-free chamois cloth and use that to wipe the smudge off. Do not get a lens cloth that has a chemical solution in it.

The team here at Kirk’s Cameras understand that many of our customers are first-timers when it comes to DSLR cameras – and we would like to assist you in understanding ISO sensitivity. Be sure to look out for more of our simple, easy DSLR and Digital Camera tutorials and educational blogs!

ISO (’International Organization for Standardization’) sensitivity expresses the speed of photographic negative materials. Prior to ISO, this was expressed as ASA – standing for American Standards Association. ISO denotes how sensitive the image sensor is to the amount of light that is present at the time of photography. The higher the ISO, the more sensitive the image sensor and therefore the possibility to take pictures in low-light situations. In simple terms, ISO will help you to take images in the best lighting conditions at the best quality possible as per you settings.

In the past, ISO was a far more technical matter. Prior to digital SLR cameras, a photographer would have needed to physically change to a different roll of film if they required a different ISO speed. With the dawn of digital technology, you can simply dial the ISO straight in comfortably and easily – meaning that all of your images are on the one memory card.

The most common ISO speed settings are 100, 200, 400 and 800. Depending on your digital camera model you may also have them in the range of 64, 100, 160, 200, 400, 640, 800, 1600 and perhaps beyond. Some general tips to remember as a beginner would include:

Use an ISO of 100 or 200 when taking photographs outside in sunny conditions.

If the sky is overcast or it is evening time, then use an ISO within the range of 400 to 800.

Night time or in cases of low light you might need to set your digital camera ISO to 1600.

The lower the ISO number, the slower the speed, the higher the ISO number, the faster the speed. A lower ISO will provide better image quality, however a higher ISO will capture the image you desire in low-light conditions. It is all about practice, trial and error in order to get your ISO settings perfect – we recommend you spend time getting the ISO perfect prior to taking your ideal photos. Good luck, and don’t forget to come into Kirk’s Cameras today for all of your camera needs!

Photography used to be a domain of professionals trained in the art of photography. Those who studied the complexities of optics, lenses, lights, and films. Digital Cameras, however, have turned photography into a child's play. Today, anyone including a little kid, can capture a quality picture. Casual photography doesn't require any special skills – digital cameras are the magicians that handle it all for us. All you need to know is how to press the capture button. To take a picture, you just need to point the camera and shoot. That's exactly why this new breed of cameras is referred as point-and-shoot cameras. They are small and simple yet their results impress even the professionals.

Digital cameras are affordable. They are no more a luxury item that only the rich and resourceful could afford. For under $100 any one can buy a good, feature rich digital camera today. Who does not want to capture special moments of life? As they say every picture tells a story, every frame communicates an emotion. Who does not like to construct their own or their kids' life story? The affordability and the basic human desire to capture and tell a story have popularized digital cameras to a degree that today they are part of our lives. They have become our companions both in bad and good times. They capture moments that can be preserved and relived by not just the current family but generations to come.

Digital Cameras are so simple to use that, if you decide to, you can leave everything to the device. From mode selection, auto-focus, brightness and light control, to timing and shutter speed a digital camera can control it all. The professional in you can certainly exploit the advanced features of the camera and take full control of the shot but if you are a novice you can let the camera make all decisions for you. In fact, you do not even need to know what those choices are. If not for this simplicity digital cameras would not have had the kind of reach they have.

The size is another aspect that makes digital cameras so attractive. They are light, slim, and stylish. You won't feel their weight or dimensions in your pockets. You could be hanging a camera in your wrist or waist without putting any strain on any of your muscles. The vibrant colors and attractive body design give you more reasons to always step out of home in the beautiful company of your camera. But these are the not the only characteristics of a camera.

You can not only view the captured images on the camera's LCD screen instantly but also broadcast your creations to your online world in seconds. You accomplish this by syncing the camera photos with a computer connected to the internet. Some latest digital camera models even offer wi-fi connectivity allowing you to directly upload your photos online. The in-camera editing features enable you to turn every shot into a glamorous shot. The advanced image stabilization (optical and digital stabilization) technologies refuse to allow any blurs in the picture. The smile detection, scene detection, red eye detection and face detection technologies ensure that you always capture nothing but best.

Feb 7, 2010 – Panasonic announced their super compact LUMIX DMC-ZR3 that features AVCHD Lite High Definition video recording capabilities, a
25mm ultra-wide-angle Leica lens and a powerful 8x optical zoom.

PANASONIC INTRODUCES SUPER COMPACT DIGITAL CAMERA FEATURING AVCHD LITE HD VIDEO RECORDING CAPABILITY
Panasonic LUMIX ZR3 includes 25mm ultra-wide-angle Leica lens and powerful 8x optical zoom in a slim and portable body

SECAUCUS, NJ – Panasonic today announced the introduction of the LUMIX DMC-ZR3, a fully-featured digital camera complete with AVCHD Lite High Defintion (HD) video recording capabilities, a25mm ultra-wide-angle Leica lens and a powerful 8x optical zoom – giving consumers a wide-range of shooting options, yet in a slim body that is small enough to fit in a pocket or small purse. New to the ZR-Series this year, Panasonic also introduces Intelligent Zoom, which extends the LUMIX ZR3’s zoom to an
impressive 10x.

The Panasonic LUMIX ZR3’s incredible 8x optical zoom is not found on many conventional point-and-shoot cameras, especially ones that are approximately 1-inch thick. With a powerful zoom, users will be thrilled with the close-up shots they are able to take. And for an added boost, zoom power can be increased to 10x with Panasonic’s new Intelligent Zoom function, which takes advantage of the newly-added Intelligent Resolution technology. Intelligent Resolution, a component of Intelligent Auto mode, helps to maintain optimal picture quality by capturing higher quality signal processing and through the detection of three areas – outlines, detailed texture areas and soft gradation – examining them pixel by pixel to enhance any degradation created during the digital zoom process or in high-sensitivity shooting. As a result of Intelligent Resolution, images are naturally clear and crisp in both photo and video recording.

“The 2010 Panasonic LUMIX lineup of digital cameras pack advanced functions into smaller, more compact bodies without compromising the ability to take high quality photos and video,” said David Briganti, Senior Product Manager, Imaging, Panasonic Consumer Electronic Company. “With a remarkable 8x optical zoom power, sleek design, HD video capabilities, the LUMIX ZR3 is a compact and versatile camera that is also extremely easy and intuitive to use.”

The LUMIX ZR3 takes video recording to the next level with its AVCHD Lite HD video format. Featuring double the recording time in HD quality compared to the conventional Motion JPEG format, and offering Dolby Digital Stereo Creator to record high-quality audio, the LUMIX ZR3 is perfect for capturing those spur-of-the-moment video opportunities in high-quality. With the newly-added Video Divide function, users can cut their video into two sections on the spot – within the menus of the camera – to shorten or delete the unwanted half.

Continuing with the trademark iA mode, Panasonic has incorporated this intuitive and innovative feature into the LUMIX ZR3. Working to enhance the potential of all photos and videos, iA mode automatically selects the best Scene mode, and also helps to correct handshake and any focus or brightness issues.

Other technologies incorporated into the LUMIX ZR3’s iA mode include:

Face Recognition – Allows users to register various faces, helping to improve detection accuracy of friends and family.

Happy Mode – New color mode that optimizes color, saturation and brightness, to make both photos and videos more vivid and true to the color originally experienced.

Other iA Technologies – Intelligent Resolution and Intelligent Zoom, AF Tracking, Intelligent ISO Control and Intelligent Exposure.

The LUMIX ZR3 features a super-fast AF (Auto Focus) speed of 0.26 second (wide-end) / 0.31 second (tele-end)*1. This combined with a high-speed start-up of just 1.1 second, gives the LUMIX ZR3 an ultra-fast response that helps to catch even the most fleeting photo opportunities. Additionally, the 2.7-inch large Intelligent LCD screen offers a dynamic, clear view and automatically adjusts its own brightness level. Also, the LUMIX ZR3 accepts the SD/SDHC Memory Card, but is also compatible with the next-generation SDXC Memory Cards, which feature a high-potential in both capacity and data-transfer speed.

Pricing and availability for the Panasonic LUMIX ZR3 will be announced 30 days prior to shipping date. The Panasonic LUMIX ZR3 will be available in silver, black, red and blue. For more information on Panasonic LUMIX digital cameras, please visit www.panasonic.com/lumix.
